Overall Retrospection of Learning Experiences in the Second Quarter
During the second quarter of Basic Calculus, firstly I learned about Mensuration which deals with the calculation of different geometric figures such as squares, rectangles, triangles, etc. I also learned about surface area which is the sum of the areas of a solid’s surface, and how to calculate the volume of objects as well. I also learned about functions which are a set of ordered pairs. I learned how to identify functions from non-functions through ordered pairs, arrow diagrams, graphs, and equations. To identify if a set of ordered pairs is a function it simply has to be one-to-one or many-to-one, because each x value can only be paired to one y value; for arrow diagrams, the x values must have arrows that point to only one y value; for graphs we do the vertical line test, which is if the vertical line intersects at two points or more it is not a function; for equations, the exponent of y must not be even, y cannot be enclosed in an absolute value symbol, and lastly y should be present in the equation. I also learned how to evaluate functions where you substitute the values given to get the value of the function, and composite functions where you substitute the equation or value of the other function to the function given. For example f(g(x)), to evaluate this function you have to substitute the equation or value of g to the x variables in f(x)’s function. Then I learned about the domains and ranges of functions, the domain is the set of all possible x values and the range is the set of all possible y values. Then I learned about inverse functions which is the reverse of all ordered pairs of a function. And lastly word problems, where I learned how to interpret the problems into equations and solve for what is being asked. I think my performance this quarter was acceptable but I could still improve in certain areas such as for evaluating functions, because there were times where I would get confused. I think the highlights of this quarter was the word problems, this was not the first time I encountered word problems and I did well the last time I was taught about word problems, but most of the problems given this quarter included finding the digits of a number and I was able to familiarize myself with it and understand how to solve for those numbers.
